Autumn's "Greys"

We were looking for images to spice up our Keene Pumpkin Festival (NH) pictures from Saturday and found today's blog. The images we uncovered were less festive and more "woodsmoke and vintage Halloween, crisp Autumn nights and fireplaces crackling in a dark room."

At the Petting Zoo

We took a trip with friends to "the burbs" on Sunday to go pumpkin picking and check out the local petting zoo. We loved the contrast between our Saturday in New Hampshire and our Sunday in Long Island...downtown Keene and the annual Pumpkin Festival vs. The Miracle Mile in Manhasset with Martin Viette Nurseries, hunters with their dogs at the General Store vs. dads armed with Purell at the Petting Zoo. We found the differences sweet and endearing, while the true "country creatures" inside the cages were a bit bored with the whole thing.

Nature's Patina

One of the many beautiful things for us about antique and vintage pieces is the patina that can only come with age. Besides it's natural beauty, patina is a history of time and place that you can never know, but always wonder about. And on our hikes through New England we find nature's "patina" on stone and trees and gates, that remind us of the settlers who paved the way for our journey ahead...

Ferry Blues

We love a ferry...romantic and practical, quick and beatiful. From Edgewater, NJ back to NY last night was a treat (for the 8 or so minutes it takes!), as we ferried across instead of sitting in traffic on the GW Bridge.

Is it Art?

As many do in Manhattan, we often take the same route to get to our favorite places. As if blindfolded, we can get to our vintage shops, thrifts and local hangouts without even thinking...but always aware. Back in August we noticed something on one of these routes--a beautiful study in gray (below) on the side of a building on Crosby Street. Lovely without meaning to be. Then in September it changed--the tape had been removed and metal had been soldered around the square. Hmmm. And yesterday we saw him...a little figure just hanging out in the middle. We can't quite put our fingers on this oddity; installation, crowd sourced street art, coincidence?

Dial "D" for Deco

One of the nicest things about living in Manhattan is that you can suddenly realize how a place, one that you may walk by everyday of your busy life without notice, is completely and utterly magnificent. We're training ourselves to really look at what is around us--the Bell Telephone Building on 18th Street in Chelsea is a fine example. Walking home from dinner the other night, we were amazed at the palette and detail of the facade. Rythamic, tonal, geometric with an organic inspiration, the building is deco at its best. Using Bell as the jumping off point, here's a few other deco treasures we uncovered:

Portraits in a Rural Palette
