YIKES

Before

One of the first things we fell in love with when we first looked at our home in NH was the fireplace in our kitchen. Located in the 1790's portion of the house, it provided a cozy, warm space to entertain and a place of quiet on a chilly day. But as of this week, our fireplace is being dismantled after becoming unsafe within a matter of months. We're very sad, but we're glad we didn't burn the house down. Next step? Stay tuned!

A 30's Autumnal Palette

We love autumnal russets, blacks, reds and creams used well- they've never been used better than in the 1930's.

Curves of Light

Our online stroll last night led us to Obsolete, a digital land filled with some of the beautiful and unique antique objects we've seen in a long while. We explored the lighting section first and knew we had to share it today. Each light is amazingly intricate and complex...a work of art unto themselves. We paired them below with sections of the city that feel similar once deconstructed from the whole.

Finds of the Week

We had fun this weekend finding a few objects with a sculptural presence only achieved through obsolescence...metal dental molds look torturous, a vintage aquarium with thick wavy glass makes the nets it came with look as if they are floating in a murky river bottom. Beautiful.

Rural "Snapshots"

We found David Lenz's work in an old issue of American Art Review last night. We were struck by the beauty of Dairyland (below), and had to look twice before realizing it's an oil on linen. Lenz's hyperrealistic portraits capture the emotion and spirit of what's typically burned on film, but the medium seems to make the moment that much more special...

Walking the Line

A walk through the Lower East Side last weekend had us snapping photos of storefronts and graphics, aging ephemera and graffiti- it was a glimpse of the grittier, old New York that we fell in love so many years ago. That said, we happened upon an eraseable board in the middle of the sidewalk advertising reupholstering services- the gorgeous, uneasy line put a smile on our face and a blog in our heads.

Truck, Japan and the WPA

Illegibly signed WPA portrait sold at Vallot Auctions

We recently found the Truck Furniture catalog online and really liked the styling and the product offerings. Very WPA era, vintage looking with an updated edge...inspired, we coupled a few catalog pages with some actual WPA artwork and loved the result.
